We fully understand that the value and trust placed in law enforcement has been questioned based on the actions of a few officers. Additionally, the lack of transparency has eroded trust. Emory Police Department is committed to fostering a safe and inclusive campus for everyone. That begins with earning the community’s trust through our actions.

During the past year, we have hosted listening sessions with students, faculty and staff. Emory Police Department has revised its use of force policies, increased training on de-escalation techniques, and partnered with Justice & Sustainability Associates to create higher policing standards. Through communication and collaboration, we seek to be a model for higher education policing.

Property crime or theft is the primary issue that occurs on campus. Avoid leaving valuable items—particularly laptops, phones, and computers—unattended in public spaces. Keep doors locked, and remove valuable items, including weapons, from vehicles parked on campus. If you are the victim of a theft on campus, please call Emory Police Department at 404.727.6111. Also, download the LiveSafe app from the Apple App Store or Google Play (enable location services and push notifications when prompted). We also produced a short video with safety tips.

To alert our community when serious crimes occur on or near our campuses, Emory follows a Timely Warning Protocol, providing campus communities (as appropriate) email notification of crimes covered by the Clery Act. We also strongly encourage all Emory students, faculty, and staff to download the LiveSafe app from the Apple App Store or Google Play (enable location services and push notifications when prompted).

We highly recommend programming the Emory Police Department number (404.727.6111) into your phone. Call us 24 hours a day if you need emergency assistance. When you call 911, the responding organization varies based on your location.

  • If you call 911 on the Emory University campus, you may receive a response from Atlanta or DeKalb police departments and/or the Emory Emergency Medical Service program, American Medical Response, and the DeKalb County Fire Rescue.
  • If you call 911 from Oxford College the Oxford Police Department will respond. From midnight to 8 a.m., Newton County Sherriff’s Office answers calls.
  • If you call 911 from our Emory University Hospital in Midtown, you will receive a response from the Atlanta Police Department.

Emory Police Department has a strong partnership with metro-Atlanta law enforcement agencies and first responders. They typically notify us of on-campus emergencies. To reach EPD for emergency assistance, please call 404.727.6111.

Incident reports are currently available at no charge to involved parties. To others, reports are released in accord with Georgia's Records Act guidelines Additionally, we post daily crime and fire logs on our website. To alert our community when serious crimes occur on or near our campuses, Emory follows a Timely Warning Protocol, providing campus communities (as appropriate) email notification of crimes covered by the Clery Act. EPD officers serve and protect and lead by example—24 hours a day—at three very distinct locations: Emory University's Atlanta campus, Midtown Hospital, and Oxford College campus. Specialized units include Accreditation and Compliance, Criminal Investigations, the Office of Special Events, Community Relations, the Emergency Communications Unit, and Security Systems (the University Lockshop).

Please visit our Careers page to view available positions. The hiring process includes a pre-screen interview, a ride-along (for local applicants), an extensive background check, a panel interview, and physical and psychological screenings. Upon successful completion of the background investigation and subsequent testing, candidates interview with the chief of police or the chief's designee. The chief (or the chief's designee) makes the final offer of employment, which is conditional pending the outcome of the physical and psychological evaluations.

Candidates who do not already hold a Peace Officer Basic Law Enforcement (PBLE) certification from the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training Council (POST) must successfully complete a POST-approved Basic Law Enforcement Training Program from an academy of EPD's choice. For questions about the application process, email us at police@emory.edu.

Health and safety of all Emory students, faculty, staff, and visitors is the priority. Please call EPD at 404.727.6111 or 911, 24 hours a day. If your friend is a student on campus, also notify your resident adviser.

We are committed to being engaged partners and informed leaders in the field of higher education policing. If you have a complaint or compliment about an EPD officer or staff member, you have a few options to share feedback.
